Since foundation in 1968, the RRC administration has been jointly sustained by a single industrial sponsor along with the College of Engineering. In 2003, the Placon Corporation generously accepted the invitation to Sustaining Sponsorship of the RRC.
The Rheology Research Seminars are thus named The Mohs Lectures by Placon, after Placon's founder Thomas James Mohs, and the award for best graduate student presentation is named The Placon Award. Amongst plastics engineeers, Mohs is best known for his thermoforming inventions (USP 4,202,464, USP 4,570,818, USP 4,739,883), Tom Mohs earned his bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1962. Mohs received the Distinguished Service Award from the College of Engineering in 1997.
