Rheometers and Resources


UW-Madison Libraries

The UW-Madison libraries maintain complete collections of Clinical Haemorheology, Biorheology, Journal of Non-Newtonian Fluid Mechanics, Journal of Rheology and Rheologica Acta. These include a site license to the Journal of Rheology Online.

The UW-Madison libraries also archive two complete collections of the RRC Reports.

Chemical and Biological Engineering

Bohlin Controlled Stress Rheometer (CVO/CS)
measures deformation and normal force for a sample under an applied torque. Operation modes include creep and recovery, oscillatory shear, and constant stress. Gap is controlled automatically on Model CVO, and manually on Model CS.

Bohlin Controlled Strain Rheogoniometer (VOR)
measure torque transmitted through sample under applied deformation. Flow modes include steady shear, oscillatory shear, stress and flow relaxation.

Brookfield Viscometer
measures apparent viscosities of fluid samples in different geometries.

Cerius
Molecular modeling software including polymer molecular modeling.

Hi-Shear X-Ray Cell
developed at UW-Madison measures structural properties of polymer molecules in dilute or concentrated solution under steady shear at shear rates up to 106 s-1.

Netzch Differential Scanning Calorimeter
measures calorimetric properties of solids over the temperature range -180 to 750°C.

Netzch Thermal Gravimetric Analysis Microbalance
measures rates of evolution of up to 15 volatile compounds liberated during thermal decomposition of polymer samples, with microgram precision, over the temperature range 20 to 750°C.

Newbury Frohring Mini-Jector
injection molding machine.

Perkin Elmer Differential Mechanical Analyser
measures the dynamic mechanical properties of solids over a wide temperature range.

Schott Automated Capillary Viscometer
for polymer solutions.

Siemens X-ray Diffractometer
with copper tube source, goniometer and two-dimensional area detector. Measures structure, crystallinity, phase transitions, orientation, and texture of polymers.

Thermometrics Solution Microcalorimeter and Differential Scanning Calorimeter
measures heats of solution for solids or liquids in liquids, and also measures specific heat capacity of solutions over the temperature range -20 to 80°C.

Vibrating Tube Densimeters
developed at the University of Wisconsin-Madison to measure liquid densities with five significant figures over the temperature range -20 to 300°C.

Wabash Hydraulic Compression Molding Press
with 12-ton capacity.

Waters Gel Permeation Chromatography
measures the molecular weight distributions of polydisperse polymer samples.

Engineering Mechanics and Astronautics

Bannatek High Shear Rate Stressmeter
measures viscosity and N1 at shear rates up to 3 X 106 s-1, at shear stresses up to 15 kPa, at temperatures from ambient to 160°C.

Bannatek Melt Stressmeter
measures viscosity and N1 at shear rates up to 3,000 s-1, at shear stresses up to 200 kPa, at temperatures up to 250°C.

Bannatek Ultra High Shear Rate Viscometer
measures viscosities in the few cP range at shear rates up to 107 s-1.

Eleven-Decade Dynamic Mechanical Analysis
developed by Professor Lakes, this solids testing apparatus measures the storage and loss moduli over 11 decades of test frequency.

FIDAP
a fluid dynamics analysis package based on a general purpose finite element code to simulate mostly Newtonian incompressible flows in complex geometries, including the effects of temperature and the presence of chemical species.

FLUCODE
a research finite element code developed at the University of Wisconsin-Madison to investigate the behavior of single-integral, non-Newtonian constitutive models in incompressible, steady flows in complex geometries, using FIDAP as a "front-end."

Brabender Plasticorder
torque rheometer and single screw extruder with 0.75-inch screw.

Central Automated Machinery Thermoforming Machine
for pilot scale thermoforming experiments.

Durometers
for measuring hardness rubbers and plastics: all scales, in accordance with ASTM D2240.

FLUENT
a general computational fluid dynamics package based on the finite volume method. It has capabilities for Newtonian laminar and turbulent flows with phase transitions, heat and mass transfer and chemical reactions, as well as some non-Newtonian flow capability.

Interlaken True Shear Rheometer
equipped with Bose ElectroForce Control System: Sliding plate rheometer with shear stress transducer for measuring nonlinear viscoelastic properties of molten plastics.

IRIS
software to analyze rheological data from many rheometers and to determine rheological parameters using Winter's parsimonious technique.  Includes time-temperature superposition and conversion of dynamic data into linear relaxation spectra.

Kayeness Dart Drop Impact Tester
measures impact strength of plastic film or thin sheet.

Kayeness Melt Indexer
extrusion plastometer for molten plastics, conforming to ASTM D1238.

Killion Single-Screw Extruder and Film Blowing Tower
equipped with 1-inch screw.

Koehler Instrument Company Gel Penetrometer
for cone and needle indentation penetrometry of polymer gels, waxes and greases.

POLYFLOW
a general purpose finite element code for analysis of industrial flow processes dominated by nonlinear viscous phenomena and viscoelastic effects.

Reologica Stresstech, Controlled Stress and Strain Rheometer
measures linear viscoelastic properties of molten plastics (donated by Curwood, a Bemis company).

Rocheleau Blow Molder
equipped with one inch single-screw extruder.

Shimadzu Gas Chromatograph
for chemical analysis (donated by Curwood, a Bemis company).

Tetrahedron Compression Molding Machine
14x14-inch press, 40-ton capacity, with digital control of temperature and compression force.

Wabush Electro-Hydraulic Compression Molding Press
with 12-ton capacity.

Tinius Olsen Melt Indexer
extrusion plastometer for molten plastics, conforming to ASTM D1238.

a commercial finite element package for simulating injection mold filling.

CADMOULD
a commercial package that simulates the injection-molding process.

CADPRESS
a finite element thermoset compression molding simulation program for calculating mold filling, fiber orientation, shrinkage and warpage, and final material properties of the part. This package was developed by the Polymer Processing Research Group at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and is used by numerous multinational companies supplying the automotive, electronics and household goods industries.

Izod Impact Tester,
measures a materials resistance to impact.

Moldex3D
a commercial package that simulates the injection-molding process.
