With a population of 191,000, Madison is Wisconsin's capital and second largest city. Combining the resources of the university and the state capital, Madison offers the excitement of an urban center, a high quality of life, and easy access to relaxing natural surroundings.
The city spans an isthmus between Lakes Mendota and Monona, with opportunities for recreational swimming, boating, fishing, windsurfing, waterskiing, and winter sports. Madison boasts a diverse cultural life, with the unique State Street pedestrian mall linking the campus to the Capitol, Wisconsin State Historical Society, Monona Terrace Convention Center (site of the 1999 Annual Meeting of The Society of Rheology) and Madison Civic Center. Rheology graduate students with school-age children should note that our city has one of the nation's finest public school systems, honored numerous times by the U.S. Department of Education. A wide range of attractive and affordable rental housing is available near campus, including the lakeside Eagle Heights university apartment complex.
There are more members of The Society of Rheology in Madison than in any other city.

The 928-acre UW-Madison campus offers a beautiful natural setting, stretching 1.5 miles along the shore of Lake Mendota (60K JPG). At the heart of campus, the Memorial Union with its lakeside terrace (80K JPG) serves as a center of student activity. The campus includes the Picnic Point Nature Preserve, a wooded peninsula extending into Lake Mendota, and the nearby 1,276 acre UW Arboretum. These sites along with many regional parks offer recreational opportunities for hiking, bicycling, picnicking and cross country skiing.
